ABOUT THE CLUB

The GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARE CLUB has been founded by environmental minded young people at St. Alfred’s Rulenge secondary school and was officially inaugurated by the head of school on 20th September 2012.  This club has been born out of the growing demand for effective conservation programmes.

 

OUR  VISION

THE GECC to be a world class environmental management club that cares to ensure a clean, safe, healthy and conserved  environment for the school community and the globe.

 

OUR MISSION

TO promote environmental management at Rulenge Secondary school, through coordination, facilitation, awareness raising, enforcement, assessment, monitoring and research.

Strategic message:  “God saw all he had made and it was very good”

Motivation:  For the beauty of the earth.

MOTTO:  Making a real difference.

 

OUR PHILOSOPHY:

Human Lives are intimately connected to the environment, their survival and that of the future generations depend on the harmonious relationship with natural elements. Nevertheless, rapid demographic growth, urbanization, poverty and ignorance have resulted in unsustainable farming methods, deforestation, deterioration of aquatic resources and pollution thus upsetting the delicate balance between environmental resources availability and population growth  thus recognizing the crosscutting nature of Enviromental conservation programmes, the need for improved environmental management and for all Tanzanians to participate in the efforts to reverse  the present upward trend of environmental degradation.

Our club was founded to provide technical leadership for the application of environmental practices for sustainable school and community environment. The club strives to help the school community in helping themselves to become self reliant in knowledge, skills, attitudes towards environmental management.

As members in the GECC we have to think critically on how to overcome the environmental challenges that we are facing. The world in enjoying the fruits of critical thinking. We must use the available innovative and creative minds.

Hard working spirit should follow our creative minds. It is possible to achieve if we work hard. Africans are accused of laziness and working as a formality. Then we have chosen not to give up easily.

We must harness almost everything and hence utilize them as much as possible. Globalization has made everything a commodity. We must make use of readily available resources.

We believe hard working spirit is the solution to the problems that exist in our environment.

In the GECC we have people who are fearless and daring. We are not afraid of failure. We are not afraid of defeat and we nurture daring minds.

We need to change weak perception and attitudes. We are supposed to face challenges. The greatest of all to think that we are poor amidist plenty of resources (plenty of land, water, fish, minerals, birds, and wildlife). We must overcome all these obstacles and make this country shine with sustainable development.

In this context, we have thousands new reasons to double efforts unto environmental action. That is why we chose to come together  and organize as people who make a real difference.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION TO THE NEW GEOGRAPHY

The real value of  geography lies in the fact that it helps man to live; it helps man to place himself in the world, to place himself in the world

WHEN WE FOUNDED THE GEOGRAPHY CLUB WE HAD IN MIND the greater vision and we want to ask ourselves how we were going to approach the teaching of the subject so that our students can benefit from it. Given the objective of enabling pupils to understand their environment, physical and human how are the teachers going to present our geography content so that the objective is achieved.

It is like were exploring and revisiting a common teaching-learning principle which we believe is adequate and shows where our geography teaching practice falls short of the objectives expressed in this principle.

Moreover the new approach in teaching Geography makes it a practical or an applied subject in rational development and answers the criticism that sees the subject in rational development and answers the criticism that sees the subject as lacking a purpose and application in everyday life.

Finally we chose to keep searching a systematic approach to planning and teaching of geography through a process of integration of theory and practice which will enable us to achieve our objectives.

What most geographers agree with is that geography is a field science hence that it should be studied through observing, measuring, recording, analyzing and interpreting data of phenomena from the field.

The activities of observing, measuring, recording and interpreting belong to a process, so that one cannot be undertaken independently of   phenomena from the field. But in school teaching, this process has not been followed systematically.

The main objective for teaching geography to our students should be to help them develop the ability to identify and solve problems pertaining to their environment. The problems involved may be physical handicaps or intellectual puzzles. Once mwalimu J.K Nyerere saying that we should not teach our students the solutions to our contemporary problems, because by the time they come out our schools, the present problems will have been solved and new ones will have cropped up. Mwalimu wanted teachers to teach their students how to identify and solve problems.

 

In problem solving we have two processes in our thinking and integration of knowledge. In the first process we analyze and describe phenomena in order to establish a pattern. Secondly we explain a problem and suggest solutions. Our strategy for attack is to identify all that we think are contributing factors and measure or count them. Through various techniques of analysis – mapping and correlating, we may end up discovering relationships between the various variables. Thus we find out the why or how of things.

FOR INSTANCE,

We have noticed that a certain village experiences frequent food shortages over years. To solve this problem we may start by measuring or obtaining figures on the productivity of the villagers. Then we will check changes in behavior of the following variables : rainfall, soils land availability villagers’ education and health, storage facilities, varieties of crops crop pests, villager’s marketing attitude and so on in that village. By analyzing our data we may end u finding explaining relationships between these factors and food shortages.

This is then our scientific problem solving method. This is not spontaneously acquired but it is skill which can be developed through training and practice.

One of our objectives in geography is to develop positive attitudes to scientific inquiry for both teachers and students.

New Trends in Geography characterized by extensive use of hypotheses, scientific collection of data, statistical analysis and mathematical model building = (quantitative analysis) has given rise to what is now regarded as the new geography.

The club strives to help the school community in helping themselves to become self reliant in knowledge, skills and attitudes towards environmental management. The involved programmes are

STRATEGIES

Specifically the club strives to achieve this mission through the following.

1.     To intensify her efforts for environmental education and management to the school community.

2.     To help the community in understanding nature and their role in conserving it.

3.     To work with commitment and honesty for strengthening the conservation efforts.

4.     To facilitate the empowering of the community members so as to enable them work effectively in managing the environment.

5.     To follow a carefully devised approach for environmental management that lives up to the changing  planet.

6.     To raise funds for the common conservation initiatives at the school.

7.     Initiate visible measures to combat diseases especially malaria/HIV/AIDS.

 

 

OUR OBJECTIVES:

1.     Develop skills for environmental conservation and management.

2.     Participate in actual involvement for observation, records, analysis and interpretation of geographical phenomenon and conduct research.

3.     To promote awareness for learning the basics, seeing the impacts and thinking scientifically in order to be part of the solutions to the major environmental issues.

4.     To promote stewardship and accountability on the environment.

5.     To promote participation or involvement of stakeholders on issues affecting the environment.

6.     To ensure the establishment of sustainable development of the environment.

7.     To promote innovation and creativity for the environment.

8.     Interpret the concept of geography in the context of its major components in concrete applications in community lives.

 

 

METHODOLOGY

The club will adopt a participatory, integrated and coordinated environmental care approach which will ensure empowerment of beneficiaries towards sustainable envirocare, sanitation and conservation.

 

WORKING STYLE/APPROACH

The club will adopt operational and non operational approaches.  It will be operational where immediate tangible results are required or where there are no other partners to carry out the same activities. However, non operational emphasis will mainly focus on the building up of community’s  capacities and capabilities to ensure sustainable environment is attained. A participatory planning implementation and monitoring approach through needs assessment will have a main focus on the community’s real and felt needs. i.e school priorities.

In our working style, the club shall maintain the position of a facilitator and transformer mobilizing all resources towards  a better environment. It is from the understanding that environment supports life. Emphasis will be put on making them learn the basics, see the impacts, think scientifically and be part of the solution of environmental issues

 

GOVERNANCE AND COORDINATION

According to GECC’s constitution the club is governed by the AGM and all coordination are carried out by the executive committee and the council. The club also maintains an advisory board that advices on its plans for sustained actions.

PATNERSHIP

Within the implementation of our projects,  the club will work in partnership or in collaboration with any other organization, institution, club, CBOs etc.

In order to safeguard collaboration between the club and individuals or and other body, the club shall establish a follow up mechanism of working partnership agreements.

PROCESSING OF PROJECTS PROPOSALS  AND PROGRAMMES

All project/programme proposals seeking resource back-up support will have always to be first channeled through the school authority for criteria procedures.

A final recommendation and signature of the proposed legal holder will determine the approved validity of the proposal.

 

SUSTAINABILITY

The club has internalized the spirit of self reliance and self sustainability. Available local resources will be carefully utilized and external contributions will equally be sought to supplement local efforts and initiatives. Donors will be partners in supplementing local initiatives and efforts.

The club therefore wills device training programmes to ensure continuity and empower the implement teams for effective and efficient management of sustainable projects and programmes.

 

 

 

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

These will involve club meetings, report systems, periodic reviews and board meetings. A centrally coordinated monitoring and evaluation system will involve periodic reviews, annual auditing, sight visits, mid term evaluations, annual plan reviews and external evaluations.

The monitoring and evaluation team, the data base, and revised report systems will facilitate the analysis of performance trends as well as the impact evaluation of the implemented activities.

 

 

TAARIFA YA UTENDAJI NA MPANGO MKAKATI WA SIKU ZIJAZO

RIPOTI YA UTEKELEZAJI WA SHUGULI ZA KLABU:2012/2014

Klabu hii ya jiografia na hifadhi ya mazingira ya shule ya Sekondari ya MT. ALFRED Rulenge Ngara, ilizinduliwa  tarehe 20/9/2012. Hivi sasa Club imetimiza mwaka mmoja na inao wanachama 141 kutoka vidato vyote hapa shuleni. Kati yao Wasichana ni 49 na wavulana ni 92. Club inajishughulisha na masuala ya mazingira kwa ujumla.

LENGO KUU:  kutumia vema rasilimali zilizopo ili kuleta tija na hatimaye kuwa na mazingira safi, yanayovutia na yaliyohifadhiwa kwa ajili kufundishia na kujifunzia hivyo kuinua kiwango cha taaluma na kuhakikisha afya bora ya wanajumuiya.

LENGO MAHUSUSI: Kuhusika kikamilifu na usafi, uhifadhi na uendelezaji wa mazingira na rasilimali zake.

UTANGULIZI 

“Klub hii ni hazina itakayochipuka na kukua”

Kwa waanzilishi wa Klabu hii,  Mazingira na vitengo vyake ni kitu cha maana kabisa. Na hatuwezi kuacha kutafuta njia za kutekeleza namna ya kuyatunza na kuyahifadhi.  Kuanzia dakika hiyo wazo hili lilianza kuchipua na kukua.

Kwa muda wote wanachama na ikiwezekana watu wote, wamejitoa kimuda, kifedha, kinguvu, na katika utayari wa kushirikiana  kwa ajili ya Mazingira.

Njia yetu inawezekana isiende jinsi tulivyofikiri bali tofauti. Wote wanaoshiriki huenda wakagundua kuwa wanamhitaji kila mmoja kufanikisha pamoja jambo hili.

Basi,

Kwa kutambua umuhimu wa kuwa  na mazingira safi, yenye afya, yanayovutia na yaliyohifadhiwa kwa ajili ya  kuishi, kujifunzia na kufundishia hapa shuleni, kwa  kuzingatia wajibu wetu, tulijiunga na kuanzisha Klabu ya jiografia na uhifadhi wa mazingira.

KWA MWAKA 2013

MAFANIKIO

1.     Klabu imeendelea kuwa chachu katika uendelezaji wa mazingira mintarafu usafi na uhifadhi kwa kutumia rasilimali zilizopo kikamilifu.

2.     Kuimarika kwa ushirikiano na wadau has CHEMA  katika kufadhili, kusimamia na kufuatilia uzalishaji wa miche ya miti katika kitalu chetu. CHEMA imetoa viriba kg 21 na mbegu za pinus CARRIBEAN na EUCARYPTUS.

Aidha kumekuwepo ziara za mara kwa mara za   Mratibu wa CHEMA pamoja na afisa wa programu wa eneo hili (PO).

3.     Kuendeleza USAFI na unadhifu na uhifadhi wa mazingira shuleni kwa kupanda maua, kuhakikisha hakuna uchafu unaotapakaa hovyo.

4.     UPANDAJI MITI: kwa msimu wa mwaka huu miche iliyootesha ni 10,000. Na miche ya EUCARYPTUS takribani 4500 iko tayari kwa kupandwa. Tumepokea miche ya cederrela (nyeupe/ mbao  323) na tayari imepandwa.

Miche iliyopandwa mwaka 2012 imeendelea kutunzwa vizuri na mingi imestawi.

5.     Mipaka ya shule imekwisha bainishwa na kurahisisha zoezi la kupanga maeneo kwa ajili ya misitu mipya.

6.     Jitihada zinazotakiwa kutoka kwa wanafunzi zimeonekana wazi hasa katika kujituma kushughulikia kitalu. Tunawapongenza.

7.     Tumeendelea kukusanya takwimu za hali ya hewa ili kuratibu mwenendo wa tabia nchi na kutathmini mwelekeo wa mabadiliko yake.

8.     Club iliandaa Picnic ili kuadhimisha mwaka mmoja tangu kuanzishwa kwake mnano tarehe 21/9/2013 katika eneo la Bwawa pale Rulenge.

9.     Richa ya changamoto za ukame jitihada za dhati zimefanyika ili kuhakikisha miche haikauki kwa kuhamisha kitalu kwenda Mpanyura.

10.  Hadi sasa mazingira ya shule yanahifadhiwa mfano ukataji miti ovyo umethibitiwa kwa msaada wa KLabu.

11.  Wanafunzi wengi wameendelea kuvutiwa na kujiunga na Klabu yetu. Wahitimu 68 hivi watatunukiwa na vyeti vya klabu wakati wa mahafali 2013. Na wahitimu 10 walipata vyeti katika mahafali ya kidato cha sita mwaka huu.

12.  Tafiti mbali mbali shirikishi zimeendelea ili kubaini maeneo mengi yanayohitaji maboresho katika mazingira. Tunaendelea kuona ni vipaumbele vipi viwekwe ili kuboresha mandhari ya shule.

13.  kutathmini rasilimali zinazoweza kuendelezwa na kuleta tija.

CHANGAMOTO ZILIZOJITOKEZA:

1.     Ukame na ukosefu wa maji ulisababisha kukauka kwa miche mingi na ulipelekea kitalu kuhamishiwa mahali penye maji ya uhakika.

2.     Usalama wa kitalu si wa uhakika sana aidha imeongeza gharama za uendeshaji wake kwa kumlipa posho mlinzi kila mwezi.

3.     Eneo la kitalu halimilikiwi na shule.

4.     Uchomaji moto hovyo unaharibu mazingira sana.

5.     Kuzagaa kwa mifugo wakati wa kiangazi unaleta uharibifu mkubwa katika miti inayopandwa.

6.     Magonjwa ya miti yanatatiza a kurudisha nyuma ustawi wake.

7.     Uhaba wa pembejeo na vitendea kazi unakwamisha lengo.

8.     Bajeti ya shule haiwezi kukidhi mahitaji ya uhifadhi an uendelezaji wa mazingira.

9.     Ukosefu wa elimu na maarifa ya shughuli za uhifadhi miongoni mwa wanajamii.

10.  Gharama kubwa ya pembejeo na mbegu.

11.  Ushirikishwaji duni wa Jamii na kudhani hii ni kazi ya Klabu pekee.

12.  Uharibifu wa mazingira unaoendelea.

13.  Woga wa gharama kuendeleza mazingira yetu.

14.  Ukosefu wa Mpango shirikishi wa Shule ili kuratibu shughuli endelevu katika mazingira yetu.

15.  Hali ya upatikanaji wa maji si ya kuridhisha na maji si safi kwa viwango stahiki.

 

MATATIZO:

1.     ukosefu wa elimu ya hifadhi ya mazingira miongoni mwa wadau na ushiriki duni.

3.     Elimu isiyotosheleza maarifa yanayohitajika kuandaa programu ya mazingira na kuiendeleza.

4.     Ukosefu wa ubunifu katika kutumia rasilimali zinazotuzunguka kikamilifu ili kuleta tija katika uendeshaji wa shule.

FURSA ZILIZOPO

1.     MAHALI SHULE ILIPO  (strategic location): hapa tulipo kuna ardhi nzuri inayofaa kwa kilimo na mifugo.

2.     Kuanzishwa kwa matumizi ya komputa shuleni ni fursa katika utandawishaji(networking)

3.     Kuna nguvu kazi ya kutosha ya  wanafunzi na ujuzi wao na utayari wao kupokea mawazo mapya.

4.     Misimu yenye mvua za kutosha.

5.     Kuna Klabu yetu ambayo ni chachu katika masuala ya mazingira.

6.     Shule yenyewe ni shule ya mchepuo wa kilimo na mifugo.

7.     Umuhimu na unyeti wa uwekezaji katika mazingira.

8.     Kusambaa kwa matumizi ya TEHAMA.

9.     UBUNIFU WETU na vipaji vya wanaklabu

 

MPANGO MKAKATI WA MWAKA 2013/2014.

Katika Klabu mwaka ujao tumelenga kupiga hatua kubwa katika uwekezaji wa rasilimali zilizopo katika maeneo yetu ili kuziendeleza na kuongeza tija. Klabu itakabiliana na changamoto zote na kuhakikisha :

(a)   Kujenga uwezo wa wadau wake wote.

(b)   Kuimarisha ushirikiano na wadau wengine wa mazingira (partnership)

(c)    Kufanya tafiti shirikishi ili kubaini maeneo mengi na vipaumbele katika kufanya maboresho na uendelezaji rasilimali.

(d)   Kuongeza uzalishaji wa miche kutoka 10,000 hadi 30,000 ili kujitosheleza kwa mahitaji na kufungua msitu mpya.

(e)   Kuimarisha uwezo wa Klabu katika kujitegemea na kujitegemeza kiuchumi kutokana mapato yatakayotokana miche ya kitalu chetu.

(f)     Kuongeza kasi ktk uboreshaji, uhifadhi na usafishaji wa maingira yetu.

 

MIRADI ILIYOTEULIWA

Tumetayarisha Environmental Development and improvement Programme (EDIP) yenye miradi kama ifuatavyo:

1.     SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES PROGRAMME

 

Prepare environmental and conservation themed Events and resources including CDs, DVD, printed matters, etc for educational purposes to bridge the Environmental knowledge gaps,

Mradi huu umejikita katika kuelimisha wadau kwa njia mbali mbali hasa kutumia TEHAMA, michezo, burudani na utamaduni kufikisha ujumbe kwa Jamii.

Aidha tutaandaa kongamano kubwa kushirikisha shule za jimbo chini ya agenda ya mazingira.

2.     LAND USE PLANNING AND CONSERVATION PROJECT.

Mradi huu unahusika na mipango ya uhifadhi hasa uoteshaji na upandaji miti, kupand msitu mpya ekari 10, kubuni teknolojia rafiki kwa mazingira kuokoa msitu, na ufugaji wa nyuki.

Pia kuna umuhimu wa kuandaa sustainable land use plan ya shule. (Mpango endelevu wa matumizi bora ya ardhi ya shule)

3.     ENVIRONMENTAL CARE AND SANITATION PROJECT.

Huu unashughulikia usafi mazingira na maji. Kutakuwa na kampein ya Jivunie  mazingira safi 2014 kampein hii itahusisha mpango wa kugawa maeneo ya kazi kwa ajili ya usafi.

4.     CLUB’S INTERNAL CAPACITY BUILDING STRATERGY.

Huu ni mpango wa kujenga uwezo wa klabu katika kutafiti, kupanga kusimamia rasilimali hasa fedha na kutathimini na kufuatilia. Kukamilisha rasilimali za klabu.

Klabu iwe na uwezo wa kufanya tafiti, kufanya tathmini ya mazingira na ufuatiliaji (environmental monitoring) kwa lengo la kufanya mpango wa uhifadhi  (environmental management plan)

5.     PROTECTION OF LIVELIHOOD RESOURCES AGAINST GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

Katika mazingira yetu kuna rasilimali lukuki. Zinahitaji kuendelezwa kikamilifu ili kuleta tija. Rasilimali kama maji, ardhi, nguvukazi ya kutosha n.k

Kuibua na kubaini rasilimali na kuziendeleza na kuleta tija. Mradi unajihusisha na ufugaji wa Nyuki, samaki, commercial orchards cum Gardens, Goat and Poutry, pamoja Higher Value Added Cassava (HIVAC)

 

Katika kutekeleza miradi hii tunaomba yafuatayo:

1.     Uratibu na usimamizi wa timu ya washirika wetu katika kuandaa na kuchakata programu ya kuibua vipaumbele na kusimamia utekelezaji wake.

2.     Kujenga uwezo wa wadau katika kutumia rasilimali zilizopo ili kuleta tija. Si mantiki kuwa tegemezi kati ya rasilimali nyingi za maliasili.

3.     Kufanya Muunganisho na wadau watakaopendelea na kufadhili sehemu au programu nzima ya Klabu.

4.     Kusaidia upatikanaji wa pembejeo, zana na maarifa katika kutekeleza miradi teule na kuendeleza iliyopo.

5.     Kusaidia utekelezaji wa hatua zote za uhifadhi wa mazingira.

6. Kuunda vikundi vya mazingira vijijini na mashuleni.
