THAMANI RECYCLERS PROJECT
THAMANI
Recyclers
is an incentive based and innovative social business that offers waste
management solutions and recycling. The project deals with collection and
processing of a range of recyclables
including all types of waste papers, plastics waste, grass and metal scraps.
The project aims at providing a range of plastic waste solution under the fromtrashtocash initiatives.
The idea of establishing
the trash to cash project came into our minds after the Environment club made
an Environmental situational analysis (ESA) in these areas beginning from our
school premises. In the ESA results it was shown that there is a large increase
in level of trash especially plastics we
generate and that we are unable to manage it in many parts of the world
especially our towns and cities. Most of us throw out trash and then forget
about it.
A study of Tanzania’s scrap recycling business by Van de Brink and Szrimai’s showed that the country has a huge surplus of scrap and the players in the booming industry are not capable of utilizing all scrap.
Tanzania still needs to mobilize more initiatives and other stakeholders to take charge in launching recycling campaigns and initiatives.
It is true and beyond
doubt that modern lifestyles produce huge amounts of waste. Yet trash is also
valuable and filled with opportunities. Trash is cash if we manage it well.
Therefore the project focuses on making other people aware that people make cash from recycling. And we aim at changing the throw
away attitude to recycle and use attitudes.
THAMANI RECYCLERS has been
innovated as part of our environmental conservation and management programme.
Plastic bottles
have recently increased in number and are scattered almost everywhere.
THAMANI recyclers’
aim is to become the leading waste management solution and Recycling committed
to the environment and majorly dealing with collection and processing of
wastes.
THAMANI Recyclers is a global goal
initiatives aimed at solving both waste, Income and employment problems
challenges especially in rural Tanzania. It is an initiative with the objective
that contributing on sustainable development goals 8, 11, 13 14 15 ad 17.
The initiative
run programs and projects that unlock the potentials hidden in all generated
solid wastes.
As part of our
scope we are working to discover and promote innovation and initiatives in the
area of waste management.
WASTES AND THEIR EFFECTS:
·
Observation 1: Stagnant water which
creates perfect conditions for bacteria and parasites to thrive along with
mosquitoes. These mosquitoes bring malaria and dengue fever when they lay their
larvae in still water, as both are infectious diseases caused by parasites from
mosquito bite.
·
Malaria is one of the most common causes of death in
Tanzania. It is important to have water drainage systems that are not clogged
up with trash or else mosquitoes will breed
·
Observation 2: Burning trash: poisonous
chemicals are released into the air when trash is burnt and is particularly
harmful to our health. These chemicals can increase the risk of heart diseases,
lead to breathing difficulties, with diseases such as asthma; cause rashes,
nausea, or headaches, damage to the nervous systems, kidneys or live. Because
of their small size, children are at greater risk than adults.
·
Observation 3: HEALTH CARE WASTES: Many
hospitals and clinics in Tanzania today lack working incinerators (big ovens
where waste is burning at very high temperatures) instead trash is thrown outside or buried. People therefore
can come into a contact with that waste, such as used syringes, body parts and
fluids or medicines. This is dangerous because of the risk of catching
infectious diseases or poisoning from harmful chemicals or medicines.
·
Observation 4: Waste from
garbage dumps: Low birth weight and abnormalities in babies along with cancer have been
linked to people living close to garbage dumps. This is due to chemicals found
in poisonous waste. Creatures like flies, rats and others that are attracted by
the trash lying around spread fatal infectious diseases. Those people who are
living close to a garbage dump or where the water is polluted are especially at
risk
Final remarks: WASTE IS
OUR NUMBER ONE ENERMY. Infectious
diseases caused by trash account for 60% of all patients in our hospitals. We
must deal with wastes as they are produced.
· Trash is valuable. Plenty
of materials that we usually throw away can be recycled or used again. Trash is
cash if we manage it well.
We want to make trash count in our areas by
transforming waste into value. By doing so we shall conserve the environment,
create job opportunities, generate income and improve the community health.
